Vinegar was given to Jesus as he hung on the cross dying as a mockery designed to extract the last amount of torment. Matthew 27:48 says "Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus." And it is recorded that after this He died. For me. For you.
The drink was likely the common drink of workers and soldiers known as posca, which was a mixture of old vinegar, warm water and raw eggs. And yet My gram used to say "you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar" to my inevitable response of "ewww who wants flies"! Meaning if I wanted something from her I should probably put a smile on my face, ask nicely and say please. It is called the art of schmoozing defined as "to sweet talk people so that they give you what you want."
According to Luke 6:45, "the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." And just might get you that chocolate chip cookie right before dinner.
"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver." Proverbs 25:11
Fitly? Yes fitly. As in the proper manner or place or at the proper time.
There are over 100 different Bible verses that pertain to the power of the human tongue. My own personal well oiled Psalm 141:3 "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!" to Romans 10:9 "Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." And in Matthew 12:36 we are warned "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak". You betcha your words will come back to you. And it will be sooner than later. Right here and right now you will have as you say. Do your words bring life? Or do your words bring death? So put into practice now that which you choose for your self. Consider it studying up for the big final that will come. God will be reviewing them and it will be seen how they manifested. Did they do harm? Or did they bring love? Make your words gold.
From Genesis through Revelations silver and gold are mentioned over 780 times.
Kirk Franklin's gospel song sings of...
Silver and gold.
Silver and gold.
I'd rather have Jesus than silver and gold.
No fame or fortune.
Nor riches untold.
I'd rather have Jesus than silver and gold.
Yes, I would rather have Jesus. Why? God's will. God's grace.
