Depending on the kindness of strangers. Part 2 of the Starfish story.

Denise R Dahlheimer

Depending on the kindness of strangers. Not for the feint of heart I think. There is the story of the starfish where a young boy is witnessed by a an older fellow as he throws starfish after starfish back into the sea. This act perplexes the man in his knowing that the tide will just wash them back up on the beach. Upon asking the boy why he is doing this, he is met with the reply "because it matters to that one to get the chance to live again."

But the story does not stop there. As the hours accumulated, a crowd gathered as the boy carefully picked up starfish after starfish and returned them to the sea and goodwill filled the atmosphere. Many others who would have been content in beach walking or collecting shells, looked again and the desire to do good filled their hearts and they stepped in to help. Someone called the news station and a reporter was dispatched with a camera to air the local “human interest” story. The city council got wind of this congregation and sent out one of their members to witness the event. Even a local marine biologist was intrigued by this current state of and wanted to help. Standing on the beach, watching the impromptu rescue, they talked. A meeting was warranted. Proposals were sought. And the "Save the Starfish" program was born inspiring other cities all up and down the coast to do the same to prolong the extinction of these sea stars.

Mother Theresa said, "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

And this painting of the sea star is called REST. After all this do-gooding?! Yes, REST. After a life long battle of being thrown up on the beach by pounding waves over and over again, with every fiber of our being screaming to get back up and get out there. sometimes we are just supposed to wait. And then there is the still small voice speaking into your heart "Be still and know that I am God". Yes Be still. Did you ever stop and think that your dilemma is just an answer away from another's ministry? That maybe just maybe there is a one of God's children who can come along and teach you how to move through the waves?

THIS IS REST. A STAR MADE UP OF A THOUSAND STARS.

Why? When you realize you are only human and things have gotten the better of you, it puts you in the position to see that God is really GOD! And oh how He cares!

"He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth."

Psalms 57:3. So when in doubt. Don't. Just wait. "My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him." Psalms 62:5.

And I hear the song God of Wonders by Chris Tomlin singing "Lord of all creation, Of the water, earth and sky. The Heavens are your Tabernacle, Glory to the Lord on high..."

Blessings till we meet on the other side.
